Four ways we support mothers

From awareness to healing, here is how SMI is changing maternal mental health in Sierra Leone.

Programme 01

Awareness and education

We break stigma through radio shows, market outreaches, school talks and social media, in English and Krio. We teach communities that postpartum depression is real, common and treatable.

Visit the resource centre

In practice

  • Community awareness campaigns
  • Educational workshops and health talks
  • Door to door sensitisation
  • Distribution of IEC materials
  • Radio programmes in English and Krio
Programme 02

Support groups and counselling

Free, confidential groups for mothers. In person in Freetown and on WhatsApp nationwide. Share your story, learn coping tools, and find out you are not alone.

Every first Saturday, Freetown Community Centre.

Join a support group

In practice

  • Monthly group counselling sessions
  • Individual sessions where needed
  • WhatsApp peer support groups
  • Referral to mental health services
  • Care packages: maternal kits and baby essentials
Programme 03

Training health workers

We train midwives, community health officers and nurses to screen for postpartum depression during antenatal and postnatal visits, and we give clinics the tools to refer mothers to support early.

Screening covers pregnant women and mothers in the first twelve months after delivery.

Request training for your clinic

In practice

  • Screening skills for antenatal and postnatal visits
  • Referral pathways into SMI support groups
  • Recognising when to escalate to clinical care
  • Follow-up and refresher sessions
Programme 04

Advocacy and policy

We work with government and partners to include maternal mental health in national health policy, and we amplify mothers' voices so decision makers listen.

Read our reports

In practice

  • Policy submissions and consultations
  • Research and collaboration on maternal mental health
  • Published impact and outreach reports
  • Coalition work with NGOs and health institutions
For clinics and health facilities

Request training for your team

Tell us about your facility and we will get back to you about scheduling a screening training session.

What training covers

A half day session covering what postpartum depression is, how to screen for it during routine antenatal and postnatal visits, how to talk to a mother about it, and how to refer her to support.

What it costs

[VERIFY: confirm whether training is free, subsidised or charged, and whether SMI covers travel. Do not publish this page until this is answered, because clinics will plan budgets around it.]
